proved to be false. This was mainly due to battlefield conditinn@
that included heavy smoke and an oily mist from the burning i
airfields that caused sensors and detectors to give -False reading$.
The regiment was well prepared -For a chemical attack and conducted
itself superbly throughout Operations Desert Shield and Desert
StL)rm.
Personnel and Administration
Throughout Operations Desert Shield and Desert Storm the
personnel and administrative sections focused on supporting
regimental operations. To accomplish this the Adjutant was located
-forward at the Tactical Command Post (TAC CP) while the personnel
section was maintained at Manifa Day Division Support Area (DSA).
The major efforts -@or the sections were message distribution,
courier servicl* operation, general administrative support to the
regimental staff, casualty reporting, and personnel replacements.
In addition, the S-1 cell in the TAr CP served as the logistics
liaison to the Forward Logistics Base (FLB), thus allowing all
logistics traffic to be handled immediately and effectively.
Survey
Survey operations were fast and accurate. Common control was
provided all the way from Al Jubail, through 190 ARA[ICO stations
interlaced with our own survey, to the border ar-d across into
Kuwait.
ARAMCO survey control stopped at AL OatAr airstrip. Commc,n
grid and direction was carried by regimental survey to the
battalions using 50 surv2y control points. This ensured a common
grid to all users including Remotely Piloted Vehicles (RPV), and
Posi4:ioning, Locating, and Reporting Syst2m @PLRS).
Posritic)n Azimuth Determining Systi?m (PADS) was a magnificent
tool and was used extensively in navigation. However, PADS is only
as accurate a,i the update stations provided along the route. A
maxim,.im radius of 55 kilometers (Krri) is applicable to PAY)S. Su-Vey
control was available every 10 Km to ensure maximum accuracy.
Astronomical observation was virtually 4mpos-;ible in Kuwait due to
dense smoke coverage.
The (Blobal Positionirg System (BPS) enhanced navigation but was
not accurate enough to help survey. Ttie BPS surveyor model 4000
ST, an accurate tool, which had been scheduled to be delivered to
the llth Marines prior to the ground offensive, never ar-rived.
