                                        UNCLASSIFIED

period forced the regimental medical to take on the line item
resupply support of the battalions +or the offensive. This was
initiated with the first forward resupply to 1/11 13AS during the.
first clay of the Kuwait offensive on 24 February, 1991.

Complications in achieving adequate medical evacuation prompted
creative communication means and repeated exercises. It developed
into medical direct support to communications and S-71/S-4 elements
in properly securing MEDEVAC availability at the battalion level.
The regiment became a backup System. Daily checks and
confirmations were initiated and later an air officer was attached
to the regimental command providing an improved capability. This
planning and training proved decisive in securing medical air
evacuation during the combat phase of the operations.

During the Kuwait ground offensive 0+ 24 to 28 February, 1991
the regimental medical team rapidly deployed with the Tactical
Comrnand Post (TAC) and the FLB providing medical care as needed an
the move and at three locations over a four-day period.
Fortunately, no serious casualties were encountered although one
Marine assigned to Headqua!-ters was @,,illed in action with a radar
team supporting 1/12. Throughout the defensive posture, logistical
preparation, and offensive conflict the regimental medical team
provided preventive herltti care, medical treatment, emergency
stabilization, battalion medical@ support and general medical
support to the Ist Marine Division.

The regimental corpsmen not only trained llth Marines in
conventional and contaminated casualty care but also a general and
two direct NBC Divisional teams. Because of the shortage of
available corpsmen division wide, the medical team taught Marines
medical triage, emergency treatment, stabilization and
decontamination wound management principles to fill the gap in
care for NBC casualty decon sites.

At the conclusion of hostilities on 28 February, 1991, the
regimental medical team was co-located with the FLB and the TAC on
the outskirts of Kuwait City. All minor combat injuries had been
handled and those Marines returned to duty. NC) serious injuries or
mortalities were received and no medical evacuations called at the
RAS. A few Enemy Prisoners of War (EPW) were seen, treated and
sent to collection and clearing companies or EPW holding centers
-For proper processing and care. The regimental medical team was
          ready for retrograde movemert.

                        Nuclear, Biological, and ChL-mical Defense

Durir.g this period, the NBC Defensive training tempo increased
in order tc) fine-tune operating procedures in monitor/sLtrvey,
equipment and per@@onnel decontamination, mass NBC contaminated
casualties, and control center operations. During combat
operations, the regiment experienced 14 incidents of chemicals
being detected which resulted in an increased MOPP level. -All
