Desert '3torm began early on 17 January, 1991. As the operational
tempo increased and the adrenalin -Flowed -Faster, the regiment
solidified its plan to support lst Marine Division's offensive
breaching scheme. On the 21st, llth Marines fired its first
mission against Iraqi forces when First Battalion, Twelfth Marines
conducted an early morning surface artillery raid just south of
Khafji. This raid was the first in a series of llth Marines
artillery raids conducted along the Saudi/Kuwaiti border both on
the Persian Gulf coast and also along the southwest border area
near the Al Wafrah and Umm Gudair oil fields. The raids were an
unqualified success in keeping the Iraqis confused as to the actual
offensive date, attriting Iraqi -Forces, and greatly affecting the
enemy's will to fight. Ilth Marines developed an air qltick-fire
net that linked the Target Processing Center with the Tactical Air
Commander (Airborne) allowing rapid engagement of enemy counter r-P
fire targets by Marine aircraft.
