acquiring dozens of counterfire targets. After clearance by the
appropriate maneuver fire support coordination agency, 42 of-those
targets were engaged, 26 by a-tillery, and 17 by close air support
(CAS) aircraft. An air quick-+ire channel, which connected Ilth
MRrines Air Officer to the Tactical Airborne Controller (Airborne)
(TAC(A)), was developed two weeks prior to the ground offensive.
Based on the Commanding General's guidance, Ilth Marines set up two
nets in the COC next to the Target Processing Center (TPC): the
Tactical Air Direction (TAD) -and the Tactical Air
Request/Helicopter Request (TAR/HR). The air officer requested CAS
aircraft and MEDEVAC% when needed via the two air nets.

                                            PLANS

Four division fire support plans (attached) were published
during January and February. These plans accompanied maneuver
plans which transitioned lst MarDiv from a defensive posture along
the Saudi coast to its attack through the obstacle belts west of
           the Al Wa-Frah oil field.

The first plan was published 041500 Jan 1991 to Support
division Frag Order 20-90 which outlined Ist MarDiv's deployment
north to continue a defense in sector as the I MEF covering force.

T:-te second plan, published 16050OZ Jan 1991, was the Appendix
12 (Fire Support) to Annex C (OpereAtions) to Operation Order 1-91
(Operation Desert Storm). This formal plan served as the base
document for fire support in the offense. The maneuver and +ire
support plans contained in Operation Order 1-91 were based on
deliberate breaches by Ist MarDiv through two obstacle belts and a
passage of lines by 2d MarDiv.

The third plari, Fire Support Plan to division Frag Order 09-91
(published 071400C Feb 91), supported Ist MarDiv's movement west to
assembly areas in preparation for offensive operations while
maintaining a strongpoint defense at Al Mishab. A series of on
order Coordinated Fire Lines (CFL) and Free Fire Areas (FFA@
enabled the division force operating adjacent to the Saudi -
VLtwaiti "elbow" to fall back toward the division's main defensive
areas while facilitating the uncoordinated attack of enemy -Forces
penetrating the division sector. A consolidated division list of
targets ba%ed on terrain targeting accompanied the fire plan.

A fourth fire support plan was published or. 171200C Feb 91 to
support division Frag Order 1-91 (Operalion Desert Storm). The.
