As the war continued, the operational tempo *or the Ist MarinE-
Division markedly increased. Incoming fires landed around Mishab
and at the southwestern part of the Kuwaiti border from grids OS63
58 to US 47 99. During one 5/11 raid, incoming rounds forced an
early displacement by the battery. However, the artillery raids
caused the enemy to react in ways which gave away his positions and
strength, allowing Ilth Marines to attrit his forces, and
ultimately deter his will to fight.
During February, Ilth MRrines displaced west to the vicinity of
Al Oaraah (grid OS 4224) and continued planning for the artillery
support of offensive operations. The regiment conducted
digital/voice CPX%, and held ongoing NBC training. 5/11 continued
executing artillery raids through 10 February while 3/12 and 1/11
conducted a raid on 10-11 February. 3/12 displaced north to within
sight of the berm just short of the Saudi/KLtwaiti border on 16-17
February. They fired missions supporting TF Grizzly on the 21st,
G--@. Meanwhile, E/2/12 (3/11) supported TF Troy, the division's
deception force, by conducting raids and by -Firing preparation
fires -For Operation Flail on 23 February.

Air Officer
During February, an Air 0-F+icer (AO) was assigned to the lith
Marines Combat Operations Center (CDC). His primrry duty was to
operate the counter fire qLtick--Fire net, a Secure Ultra-High
Frequency (UHF) radio net. This net was established to give the
CDC a direct link to a Tactical Air Commander (Airborne) (TAC(A)),
primary, or a Past Forward Air Controller (Airborne) (Fast FAC(A)),
art F/A-16D, secondary.
The employment method flir this net was: the AN/TPO-36 Counter
Battery Radar acquired Incoming rounds and determined the firing
location and the impact predict (IP) grids. Then, the grids were
plotted by the Intelligence (S-2) section to verify what type of
unit was firing and if it was friendly or enemy. Next, the Fire
Direction Officer (FDO) plotted the -Firing location to determine if
artillery could range that counterfire threett. If artillery could
not range it, then the AO would pass it to the TACCA), via-the
