                                        SECTION 2

                                    NARRATIVE SUMMARY

                             Command, Operations and Training

Three significant events took place during the month of
January: offensive training, integration of two more battalions
into the regiment, and surface artillery raids across the
Saudi/Kuwaiti border. Ilth Marines moved from their initial field
positions in the vicinity of Abu Hadriyah which had been occupied
for three months. The new positions, just north of the triangle
formed by Abu Hadriyah, An Nu Ayriyah, and the road running
northeast from An Nu Ayriyah to the cozstal road, were designed to
support the division's movement to the north.

The Task Forces continued training for offensive operations by
conducting sandtables and Tactical Exercises Without Troops (TEWT)
of the breach plan through the obstacle bolts. In addition, Task,
Force Papa Bear exercised the plan, -For the first time, with their
supporting units including 1/11's Fire Support Coordination Center.

Of particular concern was the immediate preparation of the two
additional krtillery battalions, 1/11 and 3/12. Ilth Marines had
to equip, upload with ammunition, and train these two battalions
while assimilating them into the regiment. 1/11 and 3/12, who
arrived in country just after the New Year, worked against the
clock to be ready for combat operations by the United Nations'
January 15, 1991 deadline. By the end of the month, they had
calibrated howitzers, conducted command post exerrise (CPX)
training with +ire direction centers, and familiarized themselves
          with llth Marines operational procedures.

Training ceased and all efforts became operational as Desert
Storm began with the air campaign at 0300 C on 17 January. I MEF
gave specific guidance in their FragO 00-1 to conduct artillery
raids along the border. These missions were given to 5/11 and
1/12. As Iraqi -Forces began firing indirect fire weapons towards
Mishab, 1/12 positioned batteries further to the north in order to
reach suspected enemy Multiple Rocket Launcher systems (MRL) and
          Rasit radars.

The first raid on the eastern coast occurred on 21 JanLiary.
          Battery F, 2/12, attached to 1/12, 4ired Dual-Purpose Improved
Conventional Munitions (DPICM) across the border. 1/12's method of
operation involved moving two batteries, one in an overmatch
position to support the other; the battalion jump command post; and
a radar within 20 kilometers of the border. Accurate target
location was important to ensure effects on the targets. These
procedures were subsequently developed into an SOP -For Ilth Marines
          -tnd periodically applied over
c the next five weeks by other
          artillery battalions.

                                                                  ENCLOSURE (1)
