          3. Expectant anthrax and botulinum patients

              a. Anthrax patients who have developed symptoms are
expectant. Death occurs approximately 2-8 days after exposure to a
lethal dose. Supportive therapy is recommended. Stress management
and Chaplain support are encouraged for staff as well as patients.

              b. Although botulinum patients can be treated with the
antitoxin, there are limited supplies. A number of botulinum
patients will not receive the antitoxin. Provide supportive
therapy within the medical treatment facility's capability. Stress
management and Chaplain support are encouraged for staff as well as
          patients.

          4. Management of potentially anthrax exposed patients with
conventional injuries before appearance of anthrax symptoms (i.e.,
surgery, taking blood samples, handling of blood samples in the lab
and disposal, starting I.V.s by staff, precautions, periodic
testing with the anthrax diagnostic kit, recommendations, course of
action if anthrax symptoms appear and/or positive test on anthrax
          diagnostic kit, etc).

          5. Management of botulinum patients with conventional injuries.
The greatest concern is that patient decontamination is thorough
          with 0.5 Percent hvdochlorite solution.
          I
against botulinum toxin needs to be explored. management and
treatment of the botulinum patients should be no different than any
other patient once decontamination is complete.

          7. Handling of Patient Remains

              a. Confirmed anthrax victim - Care should be taken in handling
of body fluids. Remains should be properly marked before burial
          and

              b. Confirmed botulinum victim - Handle as anyother patient.
nto the medical
          treatment facility.
