             e. (U) It is critical that chain of custody be maintained from
patient to the laboratories and within the laboratories. It is the
responsibility of the intelligence community with the operations
cell to ensure that chain of custody is maintained and that
expeditious shipment of samples is accomplished. Command emphasis
and support is required. CINCCENT visibility is required to
expedite shipment of samples. Dedicated aircraft for CONUS sample
shipment if highly recommended. The British have dedicated
aircrafts for their sample shipment to UK. Samples are perishable,
and timely confirmation of BW attack is critical.

         5. @ If the BW Warning and Detection System fails to detect BW
attack(s), the first warning will be the sick SM.

             a. (U) The medical system will be vigilant for these patients
and will immediately report suspected BW patients to the medical
         intelligence and operations channel.

             b. (U) The S-2/G-2 and S-3/G-3 with assistance from medical
should pin-point the location of the units from which the patients
         came from.

             c. @ If these patients were anthrax positive, antibiotic
treatment should beain immediately for those units. At the same

Vigilance will be maintained for other anthrax positive cases.

             e. (U) Biomedical samples from patients will be immediately
shipped to the Navy Forward Lab (AOR), Army Lab (AOR), and/or 10th
Medical Laboratory (USAREUR). In addition, samples will be
submitted to U.S. Army Medical Research Institute of Infectious
Disease (USAMRIID) at Fort Detrick, Frederick, MD. Biomedical
samples will be refrigerated and receive priority shipment. They
received by USAMRIID within 48 hrs. Guidelines for taking
of samples and documentation of information is provided in
reference (CRDEC publication). Location of labs is in reference
message. Note these laboratories are capable of handling
         biomedical samples, not environmental samples.
