               Capability for the AOR (@).

               2. (U) Memorandum is tasking U.S. Army Medical Research and
               Development Command for BW lab support for operation Desert Shield.

               3.    @Reference meeting concluded that it was neither feasible
               nor operationally desirable to place irrefutable confirmatory BW
               lab capabilities in the AOR. A system is already in place to
               provide such data and should be optimized. meeting also concluded
               that additional BW lab capabilities are urgently needed in the AOR
               to provide that initial assessment of whether BW agents were used
               and medical defense initiatives effective against agents. BW
               agents of interest are anthrax, botulinum toxin, plague, tularemia,
               and clostridium perfringens.

               4. (U) Recommend memo be forwarded.
