                     MEDICAL LABORATORY CAPABILITIES IN AOR (U)

             1. @ Although the AOR labs results cannot provide that irrefutable
             confirmation of a BW attack, they will be able to provide strong
             evidence of a BW attack, Significant BW identification capabilities
             are in the AOR labs, Initiatives are ongoing to place additional
             capabilities into the laboratories in the AOR.

             2. @ The Navy Forward Lab (NFL) has been in the AOR since Sep
             90, and the Army 996th Laboratory arrived in the AOR as of 27 Doc
             90. U.S. Army Medical Research and Development Command
             (USAMRDC) provided both labs with the capability to identify various
             end iiic infectious diseases and BW agents using antigen antibody
             tes -, @ rithrax, Staph Entertoxin A and B, Plague, Tularemia, Congo
             Crin-@. ,A. el Hemorrhagic Fever, Rift Valley Fever, Dengue, Sindbis, W.
             Nile, Sandfly Fever (Sicilian), Sandfly fever (Naples), Mediterranean
             spotted Fever, and Murine-Endemic Typhus).

             3. @ Additional laboratory capability for AOR include the isolation
             of anthrax and performance of antibiotic sensitivity testing to
             determine if anthrax has been genetically engineered and will be
             nlaced at the Army 996th Lab and the NFL. Objective date is 15 San
             1

             4, @ Botulinum toxin detection tickets and other reagents for the
             identification of botulinum toxin were obtained from
             the NFL. USAMRDC is evaluating the reliability of the tickets and
             reagents in terms of false positives and false negatives.

             S. @ Naval Medical Research Unit 3 at Cairo will support NFL. 10th
n the
             evacuation stream and also has capability to do analyses for
             infectious organisms of BW significance.
