SiW NBC Dcfense
(U) The survey was validated through initial distribution to soup of NBC
specialists in SWA to double check question interpretacion and survey difficulty.
Surveys were, as best able, randon-dy distributed throughout over fifty percent of the
operational ur@ts under MARCENT. The survey target population was to obcain a
representative sample of opinions, concerns and statistical data on NBC defense, from
personnel at a majority of unit levels under MARCR-NT. A total of 1629 surveys were
collected and input to a statistical database for analysis. These surveys comprise the
target population for this assessment. It is estimated that survey population is
approximately two percent of the total MARCENT population in SWA.
(U) Appendix E contains graphical data processed to support issue development.
Appendix E-5 depicts the NBC Survey population by grade and MOS. Survey break-out
by grade shows a high degree of enlisced (E3-E4) and company grade officer (01-03)
sampling. This indicates that the survey was fairly successful in reacl-Ling a
representative sample of individual Marines with respect to rank. When looking at the
survey MOS break-out, indications are that the majority of those surveyed were of an
infantry related MOS (03) which is indicative of (he high degree of survey sampling
that was conducted with front-line units. The numerical values presented with all
graphs are raw data values. For instance, Appendix E-7 represents the data collected on
the Survey question, 'With respect to NBC Defense, how well do you consider yourself
trained?" Of chose surveyed, 53 felt overtrained, 1102 felt correctly trained, 159 felt
undertrained, and 314 had no opinion. As issues are discussed in the following analysis
section, stated percentages have been calculated based on the raw data displayed on the
referenced graph.
(U) The scope of the NBC collection effort in SWA was very comprehensive and
broad. The sizeable amount of data collected will be very useful in support of follow-
on NBC defense studies and projects. The combination of the enormity of the
information collected and short analysis period were the major liru'rations in conducting
the analysis. Those areas that were not readily analyzed are listed in the summary
section as areas for recommended further study.
