1STLT BELL: Sir, the weather for Baghdad today will be
visibility of four to six miles haze and dust, the afternoon
visibility reduced two to three miles of blowing dust and sand,
cloud coverage 70 percent, high of 58 and low of 36. Kuwait,
also have scattered skies, visibility of six to eight miles of
haze and dust, reduced to four miles of haze and dust, surface
winds 12 to 16 knots, gusts up to 22, cloud coverage 15 to 25
percent, high of 65 and low of 39.
Yesterday in air activity we had 93 total detected
sorties; 44 fighters, 33 transports, 11 helo and five
unidentified. As you know, the air activity has picked up
significantly with the break in the weather. The break in the
weather has been from Tallil northward. There is still continued
bad weather in southern Iraq, with lighter air activity detected
there.
Of highlight today, we had one MiG-25 fly their normal
dispersal pattern along the border recon. That's where he flies
along over the dispersal airfields, comes up and returns back to
Baghdad.
Sir, we expect a gradual increase in flight activity,
weather permitting, with culminating heavy air training activity.
We expect this to end prior to 13 January, which will enable them
to have a two-day standdown for both pilot and aircraft prior to
the 15 January deadline.
In naval order of battle all --
GEN BOOMER: They better enjoy their flying while they still have
time, get up and see the wild blue yonder one more time. I hope
they fly a lot in the next few weeks; that way they will be
happier when they go to Allah. Go ahead.
ISTLT BELL: In naval activity, all the patrol boats remain in
port in Ras al Qulayah and Umm Qasr. We have detected out, right
now, three amphibiants currently conducting resupply; however,
their exact location is undetermined at this time. I also
provided Col Steed information on naval mines, for you, both in
video and hard copy form.
Nothing significant on missile or ground, and the
counterintelligence threat remains as assessed yesterday, sir.
GEN BOOMER: Do you have any IMENT to ask this morning? Do you
have any info on heavy construction equipment moving back into
the elbow area from the west?
ISTLT BELL: From this direction, sir? (Pointing to map.)
GEN BOOMER: Yeah, back there. CENTCOM told me that they were
seeing some of that. We haven't talked about it.
