Immediatel y following the cessation of offensive operation,
four members of the lst Marine Division Band approached their
Battalion Commander. The Band had not seen their musical
instruments in two months. They had the look 4f what this mission
had been for six months - 'Grunts." -Amid the devastation and
destruction of Kuwait International Airport they asked for
permission to spsak to the BattaliorL.C.O. They hid something for
him. Permission was granted by the Battalion Sergeant Major.
These superb Marines in perfect harmony sang the National Anthem.
As they completed the last note there was complete silence. No
one could cheer as we would at a. sporting event. It is difficult
to cheer when you are crying tears of joy. It was one of the most
moving experiences of their commander's life.
