                        '-ANECDOTE FRCM TFE SECOND OBSTACLE BREACH

                In conducting Combat security and screening Missions   on the
            Ist Marine Division's right flank between the two Iraqi defensive
            barriers In southern Kuwait, elements of the 3d marine Regiment
            encountered approximately 100 Iraqi soldiers who desired to
            surrender.  The.Iraql soldiers were frustrated and discouraged by
            the war and the surprising rapidity of the Wrlne advance. The
            Iraqis were completely demoralized. As the Iraqis courageously
            crossed over t@7elr owh mlnefleld and..barrler to the protection of
            the t-iarines, an Iraq' artillery and n-brtar attack by Iraqi units
            attempted to discourage and prevent the Iraqi soldiers surrender
            efforts. But t@e Iraqi soldiers refused to be discouraged and
            braved a toot-ftblie forced march of approximately two miles to
            escape the Iraqi artillery and to reach the safety of American
            Niarlnes, protection.
