conduct artillery raids at several points
along the Saudi/Kuwaiti border. Air condition
threat was yellow/tight. 9 LAAD stinger
sections were assigned direct support to the
regiment. I MEF FSCL-1 was placed in effect.
18 Jan 1991 The operational tempo increased in the
division's northeastern area as both 1/12 and
3/11 reported incoming rounds. 1/12 went to
MOPP level 4, but reduced that to MOPP level
0+ after sending out Monitor/Survey teams
which verified the all clear. Radars reported
jamming that later turned out to be caused by
friendly EA6-B jamming.
20 Jan 1991 Iraqi units sent indirect fire aimed at
Mishab. They impacted near 1/12's positio@s
with no reported casualties. Our 9-36 radar
picked Lip the trajectories and figured them to
be mortars. I MEF said they are probably MRL
rounds 13eing skipped to increase their range,
a practice used during the Iraq-Iran war.
Ftirther investigation proved the rounds were
60 mm mortar fired south by Saudi Arabia
National C3Ltard, (SANG) units seating their base
plates. Both 1/12 and 5/11, positioned at Al
Mishab and Al Caraah, respectively, planned to
conduct artillery raids near the SaLtdi/KLtWaiti
border.
21 Jan 1991 lith Marines S-4 conducted a digital CPX to
practice the Logistics link between the
battalions and the Regiment and the FSSG
AmmL,nition SLipply Point. Battery F, 2/12,
from 1/12, conducted an artillery raid at
0315 C (local time zone) supporting I MEF
FragO 00-1 which directs lst Division to
conduct raids. They fired 84 rounds a+ DPICM
on suspected targets. No Battle Damage
Assessment (BDA) was available. llth Marines
continued reconfigliration of the battalion's
ammunition prescribed loads from defensive to
offensive loads.
22 Jan 1991 Regimental Nuclear Biological, and Chemical
Defense (NBC) section continued intensive
training begun early on in the deployment.
The newly formed NBC defense squad drawn from
organic assets within the regiment received
most of the attention.
The Commanding Officer and the S-3 attended a
sandtable briefing with 2nd Marine Division
and 10th Marines. Both divisions coordinated
