PROPOSED SUMMARY OF ACTION
For conspicuous gallantry and intrepidity in action in connection
with operations against the enemy during OPERATION DESERT STORM in
Kuwait from 24 - 27 February 1991. Staff Sergeant Summers, Platoon
Sergeant, Weapons Company, 2d Battalion, 2d Marines attached to 6th
Marines(-)(Rein), 2d Marine Division, FMF performed valiantly in the
face of the enemy.
On 24 February 1991 at 0430, G-Day, under darkness and reduced
visibility from oil fires and heavy rain, SSgt Summers' platoon
screened the forward movement of the battalion for six kilometers toward
heavily mined and strongly defended Iraqi obstacle barriers, ensuring
the battalion's lead elements were properly positioned to breach the
minefields. Following mechanized units through lane Blue 4, he covered
the exposed right flank of the battalion with his heavy machineguns.
Once through the breach, he aggressively began to push toward the enemy,
and began receiving direct fire from enemy bunkers. Using supporting
arms, .50 caliber and M-60 machinegun fire, he quickly neutralized the
enemy positions and captured more than 100 enemy prisoners of war. This
action was instrumental in allowing the battalion, as the 6th Marine's
main attack, to maintain its momentum.
As smoke continued to obscure the battlefield on 24 February, SSgt
Summers moved his platoon forward through sporadic enemy fire while
engaging numerous bunker complexes. He led his platoon with such
ferocity and rapid movement that the enemy was kept off balance and
unable to establish an organized defense. Using artillery and .50
caliber fire to suppress the enemy he guided the battalion to Regimental
Objective E.
On G+1, again under conditions of extremely reduced visibility, he
flawlessly moved his platoon forward as the leading element of the
battalion. He pressed forward leading his Marines to engage enemy
bunkers, BMPs, and tanks. SSgt Summers' repeated use of artillery to
engage the enemy to his front resulted in the immediate capture of 50
enemy prisoners of war and the destruction of two BMPs and two tanks.
Again, moving on the exposed right flank of the battalion, his platoon
was repeatedly engaged by enemy artillery fire. His composure under
close enemy artillery fire kept his Marines pushing toward the enemy
while maintaining the momentum of the attack.
On G+2, SSgt Summers was directed to screen the battalion's movement
forward. Observing enemy vehicle movement to his front, SSgt Summers
moved swiftly and aggressively forward to engage the enemy.
Consistently massing his machinegunB on the enemy bunkers and vehicles,
he continually moved his Marines forward attacking the enemies flanks,
ensuring the positions were clear and that the enemy vehicles were
destroyed. With superior presence of mind and composure he maintained
the momentum of the assault, and engaged isolated pockets of enemy with
his machineguns neutralizing the positions.
As evening drew near, SSgt Summers platoon; travelling with Company
F, moved to cover the battalion's exposed right flank near the main
highway out of Kuwait City. As the battalion's mechanized companies
moved into position, numerous enemy vehicles were observed moving across
the battalion frontage attempting to escape to Iraq. Without hesitation,
SSgt Summers personally directed the fire of his platoon on the enemy.
Exposing himself to fire from an enemy MTLB, he quickly directed
concentrated .50 caliber machinegun fire to bear on the enemy vehicles.
His quick and decisive actions contributed significantly to the
destruction of one enemy refueler and one MTLB, and resulted in eight
