PROPOSED CITATION
The President of the United States takes pleasure in
presenting the SILVER STAR MEDAL to
STAFF SERGEANT WILFRED S. SUMMERS
UNITED STATES MARINE CORPS
for service as set forth in the following
CITATION:
'For conspicuous gallantry and intrepidity in action during
OPERATION DESERT STORM while serving as Platoon Sergeant, Heavy
Machinegun Platoon, Weapons Company, 2d Battalion, 2d Marines, attached
to 6th Marines(-)(Rein), 2d Marine Division, FMF in hostile action in
the Emirate of Kuwait from 24 - 27 February 1991. On 24 February 1991
G-Day at 0430, under darkness and reduced visibility from oil fires and
heavy rain, SSgt Summers' platoon screened the forward movement of the
battalion for six kilometers toward two heavily mined and strongly
defended Iraqi obstacle barriers. Immediately after emerging from the
enemy minefield, SSgt Summers' platoon came under heavy direct fire from
enemy bunkers. His devastating use of supporting arms to engage the
bunker complexes resulted in the immediate capture of 100 enemy
soldiers. Pressing onward, Staff Sergeant Summers directed his Marines
to mass fires on enemy bunkers, and then moved forward to ensure enemy
positions were clear. On 25 and 26 February, Staff Sergeant Summers'
platoon continued to press the attack on the enemy, engaging isolated
pockets of enemy resistance, capturing Se enemy soldiers and destroying
four enemy vehicles. His aggressiveness in pushing forward, while under
enemy direct fire, enabled his platoon to engage and contribute to the
destruction of two additional enemy vehicles as they attempted to escape
Kuwait City. This action helped secure the battalion's right flank, and
effectively closed the main highway for Iraqi forces. By his daring
actions and loyal devotion to duty in the face of personal risk, Staff
Sergeant Summers upheld the highest traditions of the United Sta-tes
Naval Service."
For the President,
