PROPOSED CITATION
The President of the United States takes pleasure in presenting
the SILVER STAR MEDAL to
CAPTAIN RICHARD C. MCMONAGLE
UNITED STATES MARINE CORPS
for service as set forth in the following
CITATION:
"For conspicuous gallantry and intrepidity in action during
OPERATION DESERT STORM while serving as the Commanding Officer, Company
F, 2d Battalion, 2d Marines, attached to 6th Marines(-)(Rein), 2d Marine
Division, FMF in hostile action in the Emirate of Kuwait from 24 to 27
February 1991. Advancing under heavy rain, dense fog and battlefield
smoke, Captain McMonagle led his mechanized rifle company through two
complex enemy minefield belts into the assault against heavily fortified
Iraqi defenses. On 24 February, after negotiating the two mineEield
belts and advancing beyond the breach,Captain McMonagle's company was
suddenly engaged from the right flank by an enemy company occupying
fortified positions. Under heavy enemy machinegun and mortar fires,
Captain McMonagle quickly established a base of fire and led his force
forward to envelop the enemy position, destroying an enemy 82mm mortar
platoon enroute. Dismounting his forces and moving forward under heavy
enemy fires, he personally directed the systematic reduction of enemy
trenchlines and bunkers. Through a hail of enemy automatic weapons fire,
he continued to press the attack, destroying the company
strongpoint, capturing 150 enemy soldiers, and restoring the battalion's
right flank. On 26 February, continuing the attack north, Captain
McMonagle established a company blocking position along a vital road
network and aggressively interdicted Iraqi forces attempting to escape
to the west from Kuwait City. In three violent engagements against enemy
mechanized forces retrograding west, Captain MeMonagle personally
directed his company's fires with devastating effect, destroying eight
enemy vehicles, and capturing 35 enemy soldiers. Captain McMonagle's
staunch defense from his blocking position effectively severed the
enemy's principal avenue of egress to the west from Kuwait City and
hastened the enemy's defeat. By his daring actions and loyal devotion
to duty in the face of great personal risk, Captain McMonagle upheld the
highest traditions of the United States Naval Service.*
