             Strikes (DAS) aga*st designated military an*ndustrial targets,
             Suppression of Enemy Air Defenses (SEAD) against SA-2, SA-3, SA-6,
             and SA-8 sites, Battlefield Air Interdiction (BAI), High Value Unit
             (HVU) CAP, Fighter Sweeps and Close Air Support (CAS).

                 The month of January began with a rigorous week of squadron
             training as per the Monthly Planning Calendar, Supporting Document
             Item 1. The *Shamrocks" concentrated on SIMCAS, 40.8 hours and 26
             sorties, and Air-to-Ground training, 58.5 hours and 42 sorties.
             Air-to-Air training was flown against French F-I's, Bahraini F-16's,
             and USAF F-15's for 9.6 hours and 8 sorties.

                 BARCAP was flown from 11-15 January, consuming 182.2 hours and
             62 sorties. Additionally, VMFA-333 stood I hour, 15 minute and 5
             minute alerts in preparation for the United Nations Security
             Council 15 January deadline for Iraqs' withdrawal from Kuwait.

                 On 16 January, 2 sorties and 2.6 hours into the daily flight
             schedule, VMFA-333 received the order to initiate Operation Desert
             Storm. Scheduled training was canceled and last minute mission
             planning was completed for combat strike packages.

                 From 17-31 January, *Trip Trey" pilots provided a diversity of
             support to Central Air Force Command (CENTAF) and I MEF. Total
             flight time and sorties during this period was 446.9 hours and 216
             sorties, 194.e hours and 101 sorties of DAS, 127.0 hours and 58
             sorties of SEAD, 77.6 hours and 31 sorties of Escort, 32.1 hours and
             16 sorties of BAI, 7.8 hours and 5 sorties of Fighter Sweeps, 6.6
             hours and 3 sorties of CAS, and 1.8 hours in 2 sorties of Post
             Maintenance Check Flights. A breakdown of combat flight hours per
            pilot is Supporting Document Item 2, and a breakdown by aircraft is
             Supporting Document Item 3. Targets included the Airfields at
             Shaibah, Tallil, Jallibah and Basarah, Command and Control facil-
             ities at Al Amarah, bridges in Al Basarah, Railroad yards at Al
             Zubayr, SA-2 sites at Kuwait International Airport, various SA-6,
             SA-3, and SA-2 sites throughout the Kuwait Theater of Operations
             (KTO). Missions were also flown against the Republican Guard
             Divisions in the area of Southern Iraq and Northern Kuwait. BAI
             missions against I MEF targets included truck parks, infantry
             positions, artillery positions, mechanized infantry vehicles and
             tanks, bunker complexes, Divisional and Regimental,command Posts,
             logistics bases and C3 nodes. Squadron pilots also provided BEAD
             missions against a large number of SAM sites and target acquisition
             radars with High-Speed Anti-Radiation Missiles (IIARM) and Shrike
             missiles.
                 Tactics used during deliveries of Air-to-Ground ordnance were
             restricted to high-altitude (3e-35,000 foot roll-ins), 45  0-  300 dives
             and bomb releases at around 16-18,000 feet. The high density of
             Anti-Aircraft Artillery (AAA) in and around every target area forced
             all missions to these altitudes. Surface-to-Air Missiles (SAMS)
