The month of January had scheduled 538.0 hours, but due to the
outbreak of hostilities, the month ended with a total of 741.4 hours
and 357 flights. A graph of daily hours flown is Supporting
Document Item 4, a monthly flight time breakdown by pilot is
Supporting Document Item 5, and pilot designations are Supporting
Document Item 6.
From 17-31 January Squadron personnel received 'real life'
Nuclear, Biological and Chemical (NBC) experience when SCUD missiles
were randomly launched from Iraq into Saudi Arabia. Mission
Oriented Protective Posture (MOPP) levels 0 through 4 were used
throughout this time frame. US Patriot missiles successfully
engaged all SCUD missiles. The gravity of the situation was
successfully countered by the Squadrons' sense of humor, Supporting
Document Item 7.
On 2 January the Squadron exceeded 11 years of Mishap-Free
flight time with a total of 44,755.2 hours and 29,848 sortleb.
On 4 January the Squadron flew 3 practice strikes in preparation
for the possibility of upcoming contingencies. The strikes were led
by LtCol Thomas A. Benes, Maj Robert E. Schmidle, and Maj Charles F.
Mitchell and were executed according to plan. Briefing overlays and
kneeboard cards for the strikes are Supporting Document Item S.
After Action items are Supporting Document Item 9.
On 9 January the Squadron emphasized combat preparedness with a
Safety Standdown. A Squadron Bulletin outlining the Btanddown is
Supporting Document Item 10.
On 10 January a Survival, Evasion, Rescue, Escape (SERE)/Search
and Rescue (SAR) brief was conducted by USAF Special Forces. The
appropriate pilot reactions.
Additionally, an Airborne Warning and Control System (AWACS) brief
followed, covering integration for combat operations.
On 14 January Capt Archibald Morrison VI flew the 30,OeO Mishap-
Free sortie and on 15 January, Capt Frederick W. Sturckow logged the
Squadron's 45,eee Mishap-Free flight hour.
At 0815 on 17 January, Shamrock Commanding Officer, LtCol Thomas
A. Benes led the first squadron strike against Al Rumaylah Airfield
in Southern Iraq in aircraft 05, buno number 161972. The strike
degraded the airfield, successfully closing it for immediate counter
offenses. Kneeboard cards for the strike are Supporting Document
Item 11.
At 2231 on 17 January, the Squadron Executive Officer, Maj
Robert E. Schmidle was mission commander for a strike against Al
Basarah oil refinery. Flying aircraft 03, buno number 161969, Maj
Robert E. Schmidle led over 3e aircraft into the target area.
Heavy damage to the oil storage facility as well as the production
facility resulted.
