3. ISSUE: Intelligence flow from Brigade @iez oriented on a single source.
DISCUSSION: INTSUMs from Brigade only contained inlorma4.1on from XVIII Airborne
orps.
LESSON LEARNED: Our unit location at T.:,rt 3!iss allows us access to a variety of
intelligence sources associated wi;h USAADASCH.
RECOMMENDED ACTION: Coordinate 'or multiple soirce intelligence information
with the Fort Bliss Special Security Office, @.4rac@.orats o@ Combat Developments
Threat Division, and Emergency Operations Center.
4. ISSUE! Family Support Group activation is essen@i-@'@ to allow for concentration
on mission accomplishment by the unit's sold4@ers.
DISCUSSION: Deployment requires an intense preparation period during which the
soldiers have only a limited amount'of time for personal and family matters.
Involving spouses in Family Support ()roups early in the process surfaced many
problems and gave us a head start on resolving them. While deployment caused large
amounts of stress on all involved, the Family Support Groups took positive actions to
counteract the stress. Organized by the Battalion Chaplain, the groups distributed
handbooks, created phone Posters, disseminated pertinent information, and held
meetings with the chain of command.
LESSON LEARNED! Most of the family problems encountered since our deployment
have reached command interest levels primarily due to the failure of the family
,iember to either join or use the Family Support Group system.
RECOMMENDED ACTION: Maintain and exercise the Family Support Group system as
part of normal training. Prior to extended FTXS, activate the system. Ensure
spouses understand personal implications of deployment during those exercises.
However, understand that exercises can still not fully emulate the hard realities of
actual deployment.
S. ISSUE: Mission requirements included liaison officer (LNO) responsibilities at
higher headquarters.
DISCUSSION: MTOE does not provide for LMO positions, ye@ it is an accepted fact
that any mission this battalion would receive, would require LNOS. As a minimum,
coordination with the nearest TACC/CRC and higher Army headquarters could be
expected. The special qualifications and training needed by an LNO also present a
problem.
LESSON LEARNED: Although the need for L,@10s is understood at higher levels of
command. resouraing to fill those positions will always be a problem until the UTOEB
include those positions. Program for training LIJOs must exist prior to deployment
decision.
RECOMMENDED ACTION: Change MTOE to authorize (at ALO 1) a team consisting of one
officer, one NCO, one vehicle, and an appropriate radio for each LNO mission. Any
staff officer/senioz@ NCO assigned to the 9-3 shop should attend the USAADASCH Tactics
Department LNO Course ;iithin six months of assignment. Incorporate LNO positions
luring Joint training exercises.
