GFNFRA.L SAFETY PRECAUTIONS
When possible units should consult Explosive Ordinance
Disposal (EOD) personnel for any disposal/destruction of
explosives, foreign munitions or related hazardous materials.
Failure to summon EOD support could result in injury or death to
untrained personnel. Only personnel with explosives training
should attempt any of the explosive procedures detailed. As a
measure of safety, all explosive procedures should be done
remotely to avoid exposing personnel to unnecessary risk of injury
or death. This includes procedures utilizing the AN-MI4, thermite
grenade which has an instantaneous fuze. Substitutions, or
deviations, from these procedures should be carefully considered
and planned prior to execution. Exercise extreme care in handling
and preparing high explosives for detonation. They are sensitive
to detonation by heat, shock, and friction. Do not attempt to
dispose of explosives or related hazardous materials whose
characteristics are unknown. Do not attempt to destroy chemical
munitions without guidance/autorization. Report known or
suspected Chemical munitions to higher headquarters immediately.
When conducting disposal/destruction procedures which may produce
a large amount of fragmentation, personnel should be at least 300
meters away and under cover.
observe the hazardous approach areas when conducting
disposal/destruction procedures on aircraft. These areas
generally include a 180 degree arc around the front of the
aircraft; approximately 60 feet wide fan behind the aircraft; and
directly to the sides of the aircraft tires.
Do not make any attempt to open a closed aircraft canopy as
they can be explosively actuated.
For unconventional methods using incendiaries, there is always
an inherent danger involved. Use proper military procedures at
all times. Due to the nature of the equipment being destroyed,
common sense should always be used when implementing the
unconventional techniques with safety being the main concern.
Finally, when inside Soviet manufactured vehicles, if at any time
the fire extinguisher system activates, leave the vehicle
immediately. The gas used in the Soviet vehicle fire extinguisher
is toxic.
