PERSONNEL ORIENTATION
1. BASE CAMP.
- Welcome to King Fahd International Airport (KFIA)
- This facility is owned by the Saudi Arabian Government and
controlled by the US Air Force. The 101st is a tenant unit.
- This parking ramp is the temporary reception area until we
can upgrade additional facilities. You will be moved wi%bin the
next 48 to 72 hours to the tent city (3-4 miles from here). Tents,
latrines, showers, MREs and local supplements (as a temporary
measure), and cold water will be available.
- The Senior person on the bus from your unit/section is in
charge until you link up with the rest of your unit. If you are the
first one to arrive from your unit. you will be responsible for all
additional incoming personnel from your unit until a more senior
person arrives.
- King Fahd is located in the eastern portion of Saudi Arabia.
(Point out Saudi Arabia and surrounding areas on the 1:500.000 map.)
2. WEATHER.
- You are not accustomed to this weather. It will take about
two weeks to become acclimated.
- The daily temperatures range from 115 to 130 in the sun, and
100 to 115 in the shade.
- You must take it slow and drink alot of water.
- The hot part of the summer has almost passed, and
temperatures will begin to moderate next month.
3. PURPOSE.
- There is a threefold purpose for being here:
a. To deter further egression in the gulf region,
b. To assist in training Saudi Arabian military forces as
required, and
c. To defend Saudi Arabia if necessary.
4. CUSTOMS/CULTURE/DISCIPLINE.
- Most people are hospitable and helpful.
- The way of life is different. You don't have to conform to
it, but you should respect it. '
- Some things that you SHOULD DO are:
-Shake hands with everyone present upon arrival and
departure.
- Be friendly.
- Sit properly with your feet flat on the floor.
- Allow Arabs to enter your personal space when sitting by
you or talking to you.
- Politely avoid conversations concerning religion and
politics whenever possible.
- Some things that you SHOULD NOT DO are:
- Use of alcohol and drugs by US personnel during this
deployment is prohibited by the commander and local laws.
