make their previous punishment seem insigrLif!CanL After obligatory, but nonetheless intense,
preparation by artillery, the division began its advance. By 0420 hours, 1-4 Cav was
reconnoitering north of Phase lane (PL) Vermont - the hNi border. The troops operated in MOPP
][[ ready for chemical warfare. At 1000 hours, 1-4 Cav was on PL Plum having had no enemy
contact. A scout weapons team overflew enemy positions just North of PL Plum. This caused
several Iraqi to surrender, and by 1030 hours, B Troop had twenty-one enemy prisoners of war.
This became a standard scenario for the remaining dme days of the war. Simply put, most @i
soldiers, regular troops as well as the Republican Guard, would give up the moment they observed
or received fire from massed allied troops. Whole Iraqi divisions were taken prisoner in this

fashion. Others would fight, fight hard, and to the death..

After the mornings success, Major General @_ e ordered the division to continue the

attack. The 4th Brigade TAC (Forward Tactical Actions Center), collocated with the division
TAC. 1-1 ABB kept its day company, A Company, in the battle with 2nd Brigade,. A Cross-
FLOT reconnaissance was coordinated for B and C Companies, the night attack force.

That night, Gunfighter 6, (Lieutenant Colonel Reichelderfer) and Gun 3 (Major Landreth)
led B and C Companies in the mission. Li this movement to conmm B Company moved northeast
form Phase Line Colorado, while C Company moved east. Both companies observed several
major secondary explosions from the preplanned artillery Suppression of Enemy Air Defense
(SEAD). 'Me SEAD missions planned by the 4th Brigade Fire Support Officer, Captain Kirklan,
Infantry Division aircraft was lost to enemy fire.

Continuing the raission, Gun 3 adjusted fire on a building suspected of housing and Iraqi
command POSL Several enemy locations were passed by 1-1 AB]3 to 2nd Brigade. 2nd Brigade
used this information in its attack on the enemy's second defensive belt. It appeared that the
limiting factor in defeating the @i troops was how fast ground forces could move, reorangize,
and receive orders to move again. Another key to 4th Brigade's success was the navigational aids
