D TO APPENDIX 10 TO ANNEX R TO YVTTT tTD@rWMV Ntli
iraqi warfare (CW) Tactics, Policy and
1 . (u) IRAQ has used three types of chemical warfare ('Cw)
t6ctits: the assault-breaker, the front-line disruptive tactic,
and the rear-area disruptive tactic. Each tactic was used during
the war with IRAN with favorable results, however, no Cw agents
were used durina 'the initial Iraqi invasion of Kuwait.
a.(u) Assauft-breaker: The assaul@@-breaker tactic has
been used by IRAQ while retreating from advancing forces. By
subjecting the advancing forces to chemical attack the enemy had
to either mask or withdraw; this disrupted the enemy attack
allowing the Iraqi forces to reQrouT) and s-@abi-'@i-ze their lines or
conduct counterattack.
b. (u) ( -) Front-line disruptive The disru-ot4@ve
tactic allows I,-aci- troops to emdloy chemical d,,irina
preoara'uory fires acainst forward command and cor,-@rol nodes,
couriterba'@tery, and '@ank-fir'@-ric positions. In this scenario rioii-
persi-stent agents were used w@--@hou-" di-sruD@u4@i-ic -@'.Ie @@emdo of

areas. This @@ac-@i-c was used to cause a maximum amoui'@ of
confusion i-ft the enems rear areas to z)reverit resupply or
reinforcement of uni engaged on the fronts.
d.(u) Iraqi forces gained accumulative experience in
'the tactical use of CW agents during the war with @N. In -the
latter part of the war, the most notable Cw use was of
nonpersistenl-l CW agents against forward elements and of
-persistent CW agents aga-Lnst command and control objectives and
administrative concentrations-in the rear.
(U)
2. Iraa'@ CW oolicy and doctrine is similar to 'that of
the Soviets. Chemical weapons employment probably requires
authorization from the highest mili'uary-politi-cal lev@l in IRAQ.
The. decision to release chemical weapons for employment would
probably be on the basis of the following considerations
(U) military advan-@aae of CW
a. (9,/NE4 An assessment octal
aqains'@ its enemy.
b - (u) - An assessment of the' enemy's ability to protect
its forces against chemical attack and to restore i-'-.s combat
L
capabilities following the attack.
