injuries or damage to equipment.
The 17th Medical Detachment (OA) , an active Army unit from
Germany, operated a dispensary at Eskan Village and provided
routine and emergency primary health care for tenant units. With
augmentation from the 217th Evac Hospital and later the 382nd Field
Hospital, clinic operations were sustainable. - During this
reporting period 4,900 clinic.visits were recorded.
(See reference 11)
To avoid misunderstandings or unclear tasking, the S3
developed a mission tasking sheet which provided all concerned
parties with the basic information to begin and complete any
mission. (See exhibit 7) This document then became part of the
section's records and the information transferred to a mission
tasking book for a back up reference. The tasking book, developed
by the operations sergeant, proved to be a most useful tool. Close
to 100 requests for taskings were received by the S3 shop that were
documented.
It is recommended that an SOP be developed in conjunction with
the Sl and S4 to address procedures, areas of responsibility and
coordination of mission tasking for future operations.
The section conducted daily intel/operations briefings with
subordinate unit representatives to provide a two way communication
flow. These briefings were eventually reduced to every other day.
The subject matters ranged from S2/3 information to Medical
Regulating, NBC and Commo. (See exhibit 5 for sample agenda)
In monitoring the operations of the hospitals, it became clear
that differences of opinion and ways of doing business were
surfacing at the MTFs between U.S. medical personnel and the Host
were previously
negotiated were general and did not take into account the myriad of
situations that developed. (See exhibit 6A and 6B) U.S. advisors
to the Saudis, U.S. physicians and others eventually reached a
better understanding of each other by physically working in the
facilities.
Group operational/training highlights for the week were
developed and published to make the Commander and units aware of
accomplishments and directions. Several highlights were:
1. 5 Mass Casualty Exercises
2. Mobile vaccine A teams (over 7,300 shots
administered) and GG teams (over 2,400 shots
administered)
3. Combat Lifesavers course (over 350 certificates
issued)
4. CCDS training
5. Litter team training
6. Bus/amb driver training
7. Development of Strip Maps
