The 244th supplied a variety of medical specialty teams to the
forces positioned in Northern Saudi Arabia. The 467th (OM)
provided a team in support of the VII and XVIII Airborne Corps in
the area of combat stress control and related psychiatric services.
The 947th (CLRG) provided a platoon in support of the 800th MP
at forward logbase Alpha. The 383nd Station, 50th General
and the 316th Station Hospitals sent a combined team to provide
medical support to the 3rd Bde of the lst Cav, known as Tiger Bde.
This team later followed U.S. troops into Kuwait. The 217th Evac
also sent teams to provide vaccinations to forward deployed troops
at logbases Bastogne and Talon. Finally, a detail of drivers was
provided to the 803rd Medical Group (KKMC) to transport troops and
EPWS.
The 996th Medical Lab was operational by 17 January 1991 and
established a base reference lab providing rapid diagnostic assays
for detection of biological agents. The testing provided
conf irmation of field testing results by chemical corps units.
They also provided consultant services to CENTCOM Chemical Corps,
established a field facility (Van) suitable for lab operations
located at Eskan Village, augmented the lab section of the 50th
General Hospital, trained and sent a cell to work with the 424th
Medical Lab, deployed to King Khalid Military City, assisted the
12th PM in obtaining water testing facilities, and assisted 17th
Medical Detachment (OM) in providing equipment and personnel.
