5. 17th Medical Detachment (OA)
The 947th Medical Company, was split to support a variety

Riyadh. The 2nd platoon performed a similar mission at KKMC, 250
miles northwest of Riyadh. The 3rd platoon acted as a reserve for
the ist platoon and ground ambulance unit. Major difficulties
encountered were delayed equipment and locating arrived equipment,
difficulty in communicating with deployed platoons, patient
regulation problems, patient tracking, initial site location.
Close to 300 mission taskings were documented by the
Battalion, the vast majority of which were completed by the 134th
Medical Company, who provided ground evacuation support to and from
134th, augmented by German ambulances, was capable of evacuating
from 144 to 160 patients at any one time in one movement and from
720-800 patients in a 24 hour period.
The 336th Medical Detachment (Air Amb) provided direct support
to the MASF at KKIA for the transport of down loaded patients
arriving from the CZ in C-130 aircraft to MTFs in Riyadh.
Conversely, the unit also transported patients from MTFs to the
Aeromedical Staging Facility (ASF) also at KKIA for out of theater
transport to Europe aboard C-141 aircraft. During this time the
unit logged over 400 flight hours, including 100 hours under night
vision goggles, and transported 50 litter and 9 ambulatory
patients. The unit also participated in four mass casualty
exercises and provided MEDEVAC training classes to over 500
military and civilian personnel. Its operational readiness
averaged 84%, 9% above required DA levels. Remarkably, and to
their credit, this unit had no aviation or ground accidents,
