division's deception operation--all prior to the
Division's formal entry into Iraq on 2C, Feb. Prior to 4
Feb, there were 219 155mm rounds and 447 MLRS rockets
delivered on Iraqi targets by DIVAR'TY's organic howitzers
and launchers. On 24 & 23 Feb, 2648 more 155mm
projectiles, as well as 98 more MLRS rockets we're showered
an Iraqls diminishing military mtchine. Also noteworthy
among DIVPRTY's accomplishments during this timefraine were
four combat firsts: (i) the first U.S. Army trtillery
round fired in support of Desert Storm: fired by B/1-8-@,
FA on 7 Feb 91; the first combat Copperhead round ever
fired: B/1-@- FA, 7 Feb 913 (3) the first MLRS fired ever
in combat: A/2i in conjunction with B/1-@"7 &. C/1-27, on 13
Feb 91; (4) SEAD/DEAD fires in conjunction with the
"mother of all raids" and support of lith AB's first-ever
cross-FLOT attack helicopter operation. ]'his operation
was especially noteworthy since it involved planning and
coordination between 2-6 Cav and DIVARTY in order to
spring the Apicties safely into enemy territory. A
highlight of this most successful operation involved the
VII Corps Arty target cell, the ICAV DIVARTY TUC, and our
rockets. Just prior to Apache LD, a SC4M-6 battery, a
deadly threat, was located along '@'-6's air corridor.
Rapid coordination and agility by the Cav's MLRS 'r-ocketmen
and the DIVARTY TOC allowed its to expeditiously change
targets; thus v\liping out the danger to 2-C,.
Also worthy of mention was DIVAR-rY's highly successful
counterfire -role. Initially, Iraqi gunners responded to
dly
responding coltntef-fire team consisting of radars, DIVAR'f'Y
'FOC, and delivery units engaged the enemy with devastating
effect. The message wAs uneqivocally received by the
enemy with the result being minimal enemy L-ounte@-fire from
there on.
The Red Team did not fire ar
4ain following the
Division@s official entry into Iraq. Our ARCENT reserve
mission ind successful deception operations, combined with
the speed and overwhelming success of the battle, were
contributing factors. 'rhe real explanation might very
well be attributable to the tremendous effectiveness of
our artillery fires as well as that of other Redleg units
across the VII Corps front--all prior, to xny movement
through the breach.
