                             Division Artillery Chronology

                               Defense of Wadi Al Batin
                                 (13 Jan - 18 Jan 91)

On 13 Jan 91, in response to a possible Iraqi spoiling
at-tack, DIVARTY raced northward from 'rAA Wendy (I\IS 41QIlzi,'@0)
to occupy terrain southwest of Hafar al Batin along the
Wadi @il Batin. Following an 6-hol-tr road inarch an one of
the desert's wettest And coldest nights on record, the
DIVARTY -['OC arrived intact at i\IS 836231, hours ahead of
the soon-to-be-discounted 140300 Iraqi assault down the
             wadi.

As the threat of xttack diminished and the light of day
approached, we began to make tentative plans to
incorporate the reinforcing fires of the 4.@'nd FA Brigade
             (VII Corps Artillery.

On the morning of 16 Jan 91, the TOC moved slightly
northwest to reduce the 'TOC's signature along the
seemingly endless horizon. We OCOLLpied ground (NS 860293)
which enibled us to make use of the eastern slope of the
wadi and thereby remain somewhat out of 5ight.

While in this position, we received news of the
commencement of hostilities. D-day had trrived and
DIVARTY was prepared to respond with the fires of its own
two 155mm battalions and one MLRS battery, reinforced by
the welcome firepower offered by 42nd Brigade's MLRS
battalion (1-27 FA) ind two 155mm battalions (3-20 FA and
-29 FA) that were still for the most part arriving from
the port. Additionally, a 105mm battalion (1-320 FA) DS
to a 101s'L brigade (OPCON ICD) was positioned to defend
P-S 105345) well to our
             northeast.

-fhis was how the Red -f'eam was configured as it prepared
to move north of the I-al:)line on 18 January.
