APPENDIX 4 (Chemical Casualty Decontamination) to ANNEX 0
(Nuclear, Biological and Chemical Defense) to 2d Bde, Ist I.D.
(M) OPORD 11-91.
SUBJECT: This APPENDIX details the procedures that C/201 FSB
(MED) will use to treat and decontaminate chemically contaminated
casualties. It assumes that Battalions have already done
limited, but important basic skills decon by removing gross
contamination and doing skin decon for the casualty if
neccessary. The 201st FSB will provide a team that will-set up
and conduct two types 6f deliberate personnel decontamination
operations: One type is for ambulatory and the other is for
non-ambulatory patients. Patients requiring immediate rare after
triage will be attended by medical soldiers in MOPP 4, following
this they normally are processed through the non-ambulatory decon
station. When setting up the site, mark it with engineer tape
and preposition as much material as possible within the site - .
e.g. Extra bleach for the stratcherbearers/ deconners to rotate
in after every five non-ambulatory patients. If stretcher
bearers/deconners wear rubber aprons or wet weather gear they can
easi
t6t4iirds the u6cbhtamihatL-d areas.
GENERAL: Units sustaining chemical casualtieslwill transmit
specific information through admin/logistics channels to
C/201st. This information is the same as that required +or a
deliberate decon operation: How many chemical casualties arL-
coming, when will they arrive, and what type of agent are they
contaminated with. the unit setting up the site must plan time
to prepare it. At the conclusion a+ the operation, they-must
mark and clean up the site as much as possible t@ limit the
liquid hazard present and the resulting vapor hazard.
Non-ambulatory Decontamination
1. After triage., non-ambulatory patients are brought to one of
the two station I's by a four-person stretcher crew and set on a
stretcher stand. The crew begins cutting off all MOPP gear and
clothes along the top of the patient so that both layers can +all
to the sides. The protective mask hood can be pulled away from
the face and cut away. This should leave just the mask on the
patient.
2. Useless and useful cear are separated into two piles. The
stretcher/decon crew must check for personal items an the
patient's uniform by first deconning their hands in bleach
soluti'an in bowls at their station and collecting personal items
in plastic bags if they are uncontaminated.
3. Skin decon kits will be on-hand for the crews to use7 if
ner-cessary.
