MEMORANDUM FOR CHIEF OF STAFF
SUBJECT: operation Desert Shield
1. MG Rhame and MAJ Osterberg departed CONUS on 11 NOV 90
enroute to Dhahran, Saudi Arabia. During the trip, the following
units/HQs were visited: XVIII Abn Corps, lst Cav biv, 24th ID
(M), ARCENT.
2. The following is a com@ilitation of notes taken during the
trip. The order of notes s for the most part random.
a. XVIII Abn Corps:
-Inland Sebkahs are untrafficable for 2-3 days after
rain.
-Coastal Sebkahs are untrafficable for 2-3 months
after rain.

- Tank ranges in theater can be coordinated; however,
coordination should begin as soon as possible, as it takes time
to get approval.
- We receive ourselves into theater.
via HETS. - All tracked vehicles will be transported to the TAA
- A "construction type" engineer should be on the
initial advanced party.
- The desert "bush hat" must be worn with the brim
turned down (theater policy).
- Everyone in theater is wearing sew-on patches, to
include bolo badges.
Contracting officers should be front loaded with the
initial advanced party. "If you see it--you can buy it."
- Jungle boots appear to be the footwear of choice.
- Keep weapons and ammo under control. Amno should not
quired.
