15. The facility should be BSL-3, with the exception of the
rackwasher which can only heat water to 1800; all vetilation and
other renovations conform to current standards. Mechanical
should not sit on the roof; rather it will be in Areas IV or V of
the same building.
16. operation of the preclinical area was discussed. The
movement of caretakers and the concept of changing and showering
were acceptable. Solid waste will be bagged and autoclaved out.
Liquid waste will be wet-vaced and moved out for the time being.
If a sewage cooker is ever installed, then the drains can be
uncapped and the wet-waste can be flushed down the drains. Walls
and floors will be washed and disinfected by wet spray or
mopping. Cages will be disinfected by the cagewasher, but this
is BSL-2, not BSL-3. New animals will be moved into the neutral
area and transferred to permanent cages, then taken to the animal
rooms. The reverse procedure will be used to take the animals
out.
17. Bill Witt and Ron Banks discussed the final cage design.
Dr. Witt will begin the process of cage justification/
advertisement/oders; this will take several months. The cages
will be stainless steel Unifab Trap-eze Cages with minor
modifications.
18. Larry Hale, Mike Roy and Josie Reed discussed operations of
the contigency vaccine storage area. The point of
contact/responsible individual at NCTR will be Jose Reed, Chief,
Quality Assurance, NCTR. She will be responsible for
coordinating receipt, shipments, and quality assurance and
security issues. The Salk Instute should identify her
counterpart at their Swiftwater facility. USAMMDA, OTSG, and
cerning the number,
type of vial, packaging, outer packaging, and formulation of each
vaccine that will be stored at NCTR. Vaccines will probably be
sent to NCTR by freight in several shipments and the packing
containers will be returned to Salk and refilled. After the
final shipment, the containers will be kept in the (ambient)
storage areas. They will be used to return specimens for lot
stability testing and to ship large quantities for contingencies.
Salk Institute will provide SOPs for shipping, receiving,
monitoring and storage of the vaccines to NCTR and, under task
order to DoD, Salk Institute will purchase shipping containers
and pay for transportation to and from NCTR.
