         SUBJECT: FY91 Anthrax and Botulinum Toxin Vaccine Requirements for
         Desert Shield (U)


         1. @ Purpose. To provide FY91 procurement strategy for anthrax
         and botulinum toxin vaccine.


         2. @ Facts.

            a.  @ Inhalation of anthrax and botulinum toxin by the
         unprotected and unvaccinated soldier is universally fatal. There
         is no real time detector for these agents to warn soldiers to get
         into a protective posture.

            b.  @ objective is to procure sufficient quantities of both
         vaccines to take care of the              = force in the AOR as
         well as their one for one replacements.

            C. (U) Anthrax vaccine is administered in a three dose series
         (0, 2d, 4th week) and so is botulinum toxin vaccine but at
         different intervals (0, 2d, 12th week).
