MEMORANDUM THR(J Commander, 74th Medical Detachment
THRIJ Surgeon, 44th Medical Brigade
THRU Commander, lst Corps Support Command
FOR Surgeon, XVIII Airborne Corps
SUBJECT: Summary of Outpatient Morbidity Surveillance
1. Surveillance of outpatient morbidity has been reported on a
weekly basis since the end of December, but has often been
characterized by incomplete reporting or no reporting when data
was fragmentary. Although much data is still missing, the last
few weeks has brought in new data covering several months. A
summary of the outpatient morbidity surveillance is herein
presented.
2. The two enclosures show tl)e numbers reported in each of the
14 categories by week and by month. Rates for each category are
also similarly grouped together. Below each week's data is an
estimate of the completeness of the data collection for that
particular time period. The estimates are based on the number of
reporting units during a particular week and the usual proportion
of the total number that a given individual unit usually
reported. Using the weekly estimates of completeness of data the
overall completeness of data is estimated to be 70%.
3. Completeness of reporting showed the following pattern:
ng September through mid-November
averaged between 60-709.
b. Starting in mid-November through the first week of
January the reporting is close to complete. Only such units as
some non-divisional brigades have not submitted their reports.
c. During mid-January the reporting fell dramatically to
only about 259 of the probable total., This time frame
corresponds to the time when field units and medical units moved
north into field positions. Exact locations of units were
unclear and telephone communications were very poor.
d. As units became settled and communications improved, the
reporting improved to the 50-65% level.
