NBC Defense Iowa
NBC NCO. With only one NBC NCO to handle all training and warehousing, chances
are greatly reduced chat he/she will be afforded time for formal training in supply,
warehousing and the Marine @o-ps Integrated Maintenance Management System
(MIMMS), once in the FMF.3"A.U 5700's interviewed claimed most of their supply and
warehousing training was learned through on the job training (OJT).
(S) Erdisted NBC specialists stated the cow-se length for a Basic 571 1, at FE.
McClellan AL, was recently cut from eight weeks to six weeks without a reduction in
subject coverage. Current information indicates that MIMMS and supply information
are now being provided as handouts for independent study. 3 6 Still, many of the 5 71 I's
are concerned that their primary MOS school is too condensed for adequate coverage of
instructional material. They believe the course should be lengthened to provide
additional emphasis on Ehe cherrdcal and biological warfare aspects of NBC, supply
warehousing, and MIMMS.
(S) For the most part, NBC Officers started from square one in training their
NBC specialty reams and newly established provisional ur@ts in SWA. Unit level NBC
exercises were held to train NBC reams and units, to include a first-ever division-wide
NBC exercise (Lst MAPD[V) .37Team training to hone readiness was initiated early in
the war and ongoing up until a few days prior to the ground war.
(S) Peadiness for NBC team was complicated by a steady influx of new
equipment and changing equipment and procedural information throughout the war.
Many blamed a lack of access co current information for training standards, new
equipment, and new doctrinal concepts as the root of the problenl Powever, this
should have been expected with the very high influx of newly fielded equipment and
the general uncertainty of war. Some suggested a news letter would be helpful in
providing current update and status on NBC mining, doctrine and equipment issues
throughout the Marine Corps.38
