NBC Defense
rFiis PAGL IS UNCLASS[Ffr,-I)
ACKNOWLEDGEMENTS
This paper is dedicated to Marine NBC Specialist, SG,r Mon(alvo, killed by a
mine in the conduct of an NBC recon mission in Kuwait, and to all the NBC Specialists
who were a part of operations in SWA. Hopefully this assessment captures the spirit
and direction NBC needs to go for the good of the Corps.
For the outstanding support [ have received that made this assessment possible,
would first like to acknowledge Mr David Vaughn, Director Amphibious Warfare
Technology Directorate, MCRDAC (AW), who supported my participation with the
Battle Assessment Team.
I am extremely grateful to Mr. Carroll Childers, I MEF Science Advisor, who
provided much guidance, inspiration, and a dirty but functional Jeep Cherokee in Saudi.
My sincere gratitude goes to SSGT Jones, MCLB Albany, and SSGT Harper, HML
767 who assisted me throughout the collection effort in SWA. They were truly
instrumental in conduct of the NBC Survey.
The assessment would not have been possible without the enormous support
provided by Mr. Bill Furchak of Naval Surface Warfare Center (NSWC), Dahig-ren Va,
and his support staff; Joy Testerman, Tracy Metcalf, Sharon Carey and Renee Bald.
They are all true professionals and deserve special recognition!
Special thanks to Mr. Jerry Loving and the Air Force Statistical Analysis team
who gave me direction and the tools to be dangerous.
To all who reviewed the draft documents and exit study, especially Colonel
Blessing, Dr. Flen-dng, Mr. Lyons, CW03 James, and CW03 Jillisky. Your constructive
criticism was greatly appreciated in purting the issues into proper perspective.
A very special thanks to my wife, Annette-- without her sacrifices I could not
have accomplished the mission.
To the many others that assisted, and my f@Uow BAT members, thank you for
your contributions, inspiration, and commiseration on a tough effort.
