Chemical Detection Concept of Ops
1. Ist and 2d Marine Divisions will make breach with four Fox
detection vehicles each. This will provide continuous detection
capability before, during and after entry into Kuwait. This will
provide us initial intelligence of chemical agents.
2. DSG will have one Fox detection vehicle. DSG will locate close
to Al Jabor airfield. If available this vehicle will do initial test
of the airfield.
3. NBC team will arrive into Al Jaber for detailed detection of
runways.
Assumptions
Worst Case
1. Loss of Fox vehicles by I MEF forces.
a. Detection will be conducted by standard procedures. Five
tines slower.
2. Airfield is contaminated by a thickened persistent agent.
a. Area could be covered by sand, burned, hasty decon. Depends
on size of area contaminated.
3. Large quantities of chemical munitions are stored at the air
base.
a. Stable. munitions are secured in place for eventual De-nil
or to be encased in cement.
b. Unstable. Munitions are secured and then covered with
decontaminates and sand to render safe.
Best case.
1. Sufficient Fox vehicles remain for fast efficient chemical
survey.
2. Area is not contaminated.
3. No chemical weapons are stored at the airfield.
Evaluation
1. If the concept of operations remains in check, it will be a
smooth transition at the airfield. we must go on the assumption that
we will have to conduct the entire detection operation ourselves and
that the airfield will be contaminated.
