                                        PRECA'VE  I TTEIRS

                 Tension was running  high along the Kuwait border In our
             assembly area just prlo   to crossing the first of two obstacle
             belts.  The Task Force's Battalions were deployed along the front
             with an artillery battalion   In direct support.   In the wee hours
             of the mrnlng a' battalion watch,offleer, called the regiments
             watch off lcer saying that their TOVVS utina reliable thermal night
             slghts had positively Identified 'slx'towe8 howitzers and was
             requesting Information on any -frlendl-y units which may be
             operating to their front, before 'eigaging with supporting arms.
             The Regimental watch officer notified division of the "positively"
             Identified howitzers.   Shortly after division was notified by the
             Regiment, the battalion watch-offlcer called back and meekly
             Informed his higher headquarters that the howitzers had undergone
             a metamorphosis Into positively.ldentlfled carrels.
