        MEMORANDUM

        Subj:  INSTALLATION OF LOCAL AREA NETWORK (LAN) SYSTEM

        1. Request the installation of the Local Area Network System on the
        Casualty Section's computer located in the I MEF (Rear) Compound. The
        Casualty Section recently moved from Camp 5, JRC, with LAN capability.

        2. Justification.

               The Casualty Section is responsible for the rapid collection and
        distribution of information concerning battle/non-battle casualties
        throughout the theatre of operations, the United States and Europe.

               The LAN will alleviate delays in transferring data bases,
    0 @urre-ntly being accomplished by courier, to I MEF (Fwd).
               @he LAN enables urgent information to be forwarded and resident
        in CONUS and European organizations not having 24 hour watches
        available by TELCON.

               The LAN eases communication between commands not governed by
        time restrictions and misunderstandings when restricted to telephone
        use alone. Printed reports on casualties are lengthy and must be
        well thought out and accurate when reported.
