22 Feb 1991 Operation Desert Storm G-2. Early in the
morning as 1/11 and the Regimental jump CP
moved forward to positions along the border,
1/12 engaged what was believed to be an Iraqi
armored reconnaissance force of 2 tanks and 3
BMPs moving south just across the border.
While awaiting Cobra Support, 1/12 destroyed
one BMP and turned this force to the
northwest. The engineer effort to improve
firing position areas near the border
continued. Ilth Marines engineers also
participated in cutting nltiferous holes in the
bermline just sout;i of the border in order to
allow the ground -Forces to move unhindered
into Kuwait. Battery "E" 2/12 continued
operations with TF Troy firing four missions
destroying several vehicles and observation
posts. As the regiment occupied -Final
positir,n areas short of ttie border, the
organization -For combat was:
1/11: GS, Priar4ty Calls for Fire TF
Shepherd/TF Taro.
3/11: DS TF Ripper.
5/11: GS, Priority Calls for Fire TF
Shepherd/TF Grizzly.
1/12: DS TF Taro.
3/12: DS TF Grizzly.
Just before midnight as TF Grizzly prepared to
begin clearing across the border, 3/12 and
5/11 fired several long range missions on the
first obstacle bL-It to destroy some Iraqi
bunkers and psychologically harass the Iraqi
dL-+enders. Because of the large expenditure
of Rocket Assisted Projectiles (RAP) required
to support all the TF Grizzly requests -For
fire and the extensive anticipated
requirement ;o@ RAP during the ground
offensive, llth Marines instructed battalions
to conserve RAP and -equested that Division
impose RAP limitations on maneuver units. The
Assistant Division Commander (ADC) concurred,
and just after midnight limited the
e/penditLtr(- (,)@ RAP for the remainder of the
night to cotinterf2re and emergency -fire
missions. Specific noteworthy events
included:
0004: 3/12 AND 5ill MASS FIRES ON ENEMY DEFENSIVE POSITIONS IN
