                                 CONTAMINATION AVOIDANCE



          1. Disc)ersion. hardenino Of DOSltions and eauloment. and us,.no
               overhead covers reduce the effectiveness of the attack.


          2.   Contamination Avoidance Measures:


               (a) Plan Ahead: Due to restriction of the time it takes to
                   accomolish tas@, Commanders must take time to care+ullv think
                   out course of action and allow for the additional time
                   required to oer+orm even the simolist task.


               (b) Provide Warnina: 1+ unable to avoid NBC attacks. ensure an
                   earlv warnina of the battle-Field hazards is established.


               (a) Seek Protection: Natural terrain mav orovide shelter from
                   the effects of NBC WeaDons. Ditches. Ravines. and natural
                   deoressions however will allow chemical acents to accumulate
                   and should not be used. Fichtina Holes with overhead cover
                   and shelters offer oood Protection.


               (d) Cover Sur)olies and Eauioment: Store SUDDlies and ealtioment
                   under cover to Drevent contamination.

               (e) Limit Exoosure, The lonaer a oerson is ex.oosed to chemical
                   contamination. the c3reater the chances of becomina a
                   casualtv. Note: Uoon attack immediately turn of+ all air
                   conditioners and beware of contamination in all air filters.


               (-F) Prevent Soread of Contamination: Limit number of Personnel
                   and ecuioment in the hazard area. When movina from hazard
                   area to clean area evervone should decontaminate at or near
                   the edoe of contaminated area.


                   a.  Use as few transoort vehicles as oossible.
                   b.  Use one route.
                   C.  Monitor the route -For contamination.
                   d.  Cover contamination (sand. olastic. etc) to reduce
                       oossible soread of contamination.
                   e.  Warn oersonnel downwind if vaocr hazard is oresent.
                   f.  Monitor and decontaminate tra nsoort vehicle s before
                       tranSDortina non-contaminated material.
                   0.  Ensure tranSDort crew members wear ao.orooriate MOPP
