SECTION II
1. Direct Support Group-2 (DSG-2) under the command of Colonel
Thomas E. Donnelly USMC was organized formed and activated on 20
December 1990 at the port of Al JUbail, Saudi Arabia. As a task
organized unit it received detachments from Headquarters & Service
Battalion, 2d Maintenance Battalion, 13th Engineer Support Battalion,
8th Motor Transport Battalion, 2d Supply Battalion and 2d Medical
Battalion all from 2d Force Service Support Group (Direct Support
Command-DSC). DSG-2's mission was to provide Combat Service Support
to 2d Marine Division to include the Ist Armored Brigade of the 2d
Armored Division (U.S. ARMY) during Operation Desert Shield/Storm.
During the course of the war DSG-2 saw service in both the Saudi
Arabian and Kuwaiti theatres of operation.
a. Accomplishments - TAB's A and B.
b. Decisions
(1) To locate collection and clearing sections -Forward with
MCCSD's 26, 28 and breaching teams to enhance medical support during
ground offensive operations.
(2) To procure commercial water trucks dedicated to NBC
decontamination operations.
(3) To acquire Army telecommunication assets and AAVC-7AI
for enhanced communications.
(4) To locate fuel and water replenishment points in the
assembly areas south of the breach and a CSS transfer point north of
the breach.
(5) To provide selected 2d Marine Division units with
additional LVS's for additional lift of ammunition.
(6) The establishment of an ammunition storage point at
DSG-2 while at grid US 395705 ("The Ponderosa")
(7) The establishment of a supply RUC line, Class IX block
and SECREP block.
c. Issues
(1) Personnel and equipment - The allocation of sufficient
resources (T/O and T/E) to properly and logistically support a
Marine Division under the concepts of operations was appropriate.
However, once an Army Brigade was added to the task organization
this considerably strained our resources. Compounding this problem
was the fact that selected T/O personnel and T/E equipment were late
in joining DSG-2 initially. This situation gradually improved over
time. However, as time progressed it was determined that more MHE
and transportation assets were required.
