                                        PROPOSED CITATION

The President of the United States takes pleasure in
presenting the SILVER STAR MEDAL to

                            SERGEANT BRYANT D. YOUNG

                      UNITED STATES MARINE CORPS RESERVE

for service as set forth in the following
        CITATION:

"For conspicuous gallantry and intrepidity in action while
serving with Company B, 8th Tank Battalion, attached to 6th
Marines C-) (Rein), 2d Marine Division, FMF against enemy forces
in Kuwait on 24 February 1991. When an Army vehicle entered an
enemy minefield and struck an anti-tank mine, Sergeant Young
courageously and without hesitation entered the uncleared
minefield to render assistance to two soldiers wounded in the
blast. In the midst of sporadic enemy artillery and mortar fire,
and unable to determine a safe path due to darkness, smoke from
burning oil wells, and shifting sand, he led several other
Marines and Corpsman on foot, step-by-step through the uncleared
minefield. After locating the disabled vehicle which was
emitting sparks and in danger of exploding, he climbed on top to
establish a location for the Corpsman to administer aid. With
total disregard for his own safety, he repeatedly dropped from
the vehicle into the uncleared minefield to assist others in
lifting the wounded men to the hood of the vehicle. Once the
men were stabilized, he assisted in carrying them back through
the minefield to safety. By his daring actions and loyal
devotion to duty in the face of great personal risk, Sergeant
Young saved a soldier's life, and by his actions upheld the
highest traditions of the United States Naval Service."

                                       For the President,
