PROPOSED CITATION
The President of the United States takes pleasure in presenting the
SILVER STAR MEDAL to
CAPTAIN RICHARD M. MARINO
UNITED STATES MARINE CORPS RESERVE
for service as set forth in the following
CITATION:
*For conspicuous gallantry and intrepidity in action during
OPERATION DESERT STORM while serving as Commanding Officer, Company S,
4th Light Armored Infantry Battalion, attached to 6th Marines(-)(Rein),
2d Marine Division, FMF, in hostile action in the Emirate of Kuwait from
23-24 February 1991. Under the cover of darkness on 23 February, Captain
Marino moved his force to locate the forward edge of the extensive
minefield and fortified positions established by the Iraqi Army.
Initially locating an enemy minefield in an unexpected location and
orientation, Capt Marino deployed security forces and moved to
personally determine and mark the entry points. Without regard for his
personal safety he repeatedly moved along a 4000 meter frontage within
close proximity of enemy activity, around enemy positions, obstacles,
and heavily mined areas until all entry points were marked. His
courageous actions allowed the three forward mechanized assault
battalions of 6th Marines to move full speed on G-Day from attack
positions directly into the enemy defensive barrier, significantly
increasing the speed of the attack and shock effect on the enemy. Once
through the breach on 24 February, Capt Marino moved his force through
intense enemy small arms, heavy machine guns, 23mm and 82mm mortar fire,
to cover the dangerously exposed right flank of the regiment. Quickly
sizing the situation he deftly maneuvered his forces, called in
supporting arms and attacked the enemy strongpoint. His calm, rapid
actions under fire, resulted in the enemy being outflanked, the capture
of over 350 enemy prisoners, and the destruction of four enemy artillery
pieces. By his daring actions and loyal devotion to duty in the face of
personal risk, Captain Marino upheld the highest traditions of the
United States Naval Service'.
For the President,
I INirl Al@@IFIFn
