           The Battalion quickly repositioned its forces to engage the
           enemy. D Co was re-oriented on line to the east and C Co was
           positioned on D Cc,'s right flank.   During this time, both tarif-s
           and APC's were engaged with Dragons and AT-4's from I Co, 3/9
           In the fog at raricc-s. IE@SS than 500 meters. The dense fog
           rendered the TOW screen somewhat: ineffective as friendly tanks
           moved east into blocking positions. C Co engaged and destroyed
           over IS armored vehicles, white D Co cleaned-up what leaked
           through and continued to push out. As TOW's made their shift
           north, the TAC(A) in an OV-10 reported a build up of armored
           vehicles to the northeast. Those vehicles were. subsequently
           engaged by a FASTFAC controlling CAS aircraft. As fog cleared,
           TOW's engaged enemy to the southeast at extended ranges and
           registered numerous kills.

                AH-IW Cobras were called in to reinforce let Tank Bn's
           right- flank and engaged the enemy with TOW and Hellfire
           missiles. Once the fog I)urne(I-off, fixed-wing aircraft also
           engaged targets. Fixed-wing and Cobras were controlled by the
           TA(@(A) against targets farther to the east/northeast with
           excellent results. Artillery missions called in were initially
           delayed because 1/11 had begun its displacement t,o the wwest
            ide of the Al BLtrqan Oilfi-eld. Papa Bear received reinforcing
           fires from 1/3.2 during 1111's displacement.

                The counter-attack lasted approximately 3 hours with kills
           by Ist Tank Bn estimated to be 50 tanks, 25 APC'S, and several
collected
           an additional -",OO EPW'S. Other enemy vehicles seen to
           breW-Ltp at a distance were hit by fixed-wing aircraft and
           attack helicopters. The Task Force sustained no vehicle or
           personnel casual-ties in the battle. The enemy forces attacking
           from the east and northeast were identified through EPW
           interrogations as the 501st Brigade o  f the 8th Infantry
           Division and t.@ie 22nd Brigade of the 5th Mechanized Infantry
           Division.

                Concurrently, 1/1 was involved in its own engagement. At
           0'730, 1/1 received orders from the Task Force to clear the Al
           Burqan Oilfield north through Gathering Center 4 (vic US
           885980). At approximately 0915, Ist Pit, B Co, Baker Team,
           Heavy Machine Guns, and lst Sect, 4tii Plt, TOW Co, Ist Tanks
           engaged mechanized infantry (vi.c QS 8579). The remainder of P,
           Co joined the engagement at 0930 and halted the enemy attack
           destroying three APC's and taking 29 EPW'S. 1/1 continued to
           attack north with B Co on the left, A Co in the center, and D
           Co on the right. Both A and B companies engaged several
           compatiy-sized units of the 15th Mechanized Infantry L@rigaade,
           3rd Armor Division during the course of their movement north.
