V@IFA-314 pilots flew in five strikes on Day One, three strikes on
Day Two, and three strikes on Day Three. These first three days
of strikes were conducted exclusively against strategic targets
in Iraq and Kuwait in accordance with the targeting objectives
1;5ted above. VMFA-314 was assigned as Mission Commander for
two of these strikes. LtCol Stuart was the Mission Commander for
the Day 1 Wave 2 strike, Major Clark was the Mission Commander
for the Day 3 Wave 2 strike.
As Desert Storm progressed, emphasis shifted from strategic
targets, to Phase II, a SEAD rollback campaign. The main thrust
of the SEAD rollback was to eliminate the Iraqi surface to air
missile threat. VMFA-314 supported this campaign by firing
AGM-88 HARM missiles and by hard killing active sites with
bombs. Desert Storm Phase III shifted VMFA-314's targeting
priorities to targets in the KTO (Kuwait Theater of Operations).
VMFA-314's pilots were directed against targets selected from
IMEF targeting lists. These targets included artillery
positions, ammo dumps, tanks, bridges, storage facilities,
infantry units and command posts. Alternate targets were
provided to pilots in the case of target obscuration due to
dust, smoke, clouds, or target movement. Many hunter-killer
(target of opportunity) missions were launched into the KTO.
The pilots were assigned a specific kill zone within Kuwait,
and instructed to engage and destroy any military targets
located within the designated kill zone.
