onboard when the assault force goes ashore; personnel from any unit
embarked on the particular ship may be selected. These personnel
will be familiar with chapter 9 of reference (a) and the instructions
provided in subsequent paragraphs of this chapter.
2004. Deceased, Minging, or Hospitalized. An inventory is required
and shall be conducted not later than 24 hours after receipt of
information that a member is deceased, missing, hospitalized, absent
without leave, or incarcerated.
1. Government Property. Per paragraph .0902 of reference (a),
all government property is returned to the unit supply system. If the
situation permits, a receipt is obtained. The original of the
receipt is attached to the original of the inventory report and the
copy to the unit file copy.
2. Personal Property
a. Deceased. PE for personnel who die while in the theater of
operations will primarily be located in two areas: those found on or
near the remains and those found in the unit area. For the purposes
of clarification, all individual gear/property moved ashore but not
found near the remains will be considered to be FE found in the unit
area. PE found on or near the remains will be banded per the
guidance contained in Chapter 6 of this compendium.
b. PE located in the unit area will be collected and inventoried
by the inventory board. Gear ashore but not evacuated concurrently
with the remains should be returned to the members original ship
where the inventory process will occur. It is not necessary that the
PE be concurrently forwarded or consolidated, if doing so would delay
the required inventory shipment. Use inventory form DD form 1070
(figure 2-1) for deceased personnel, or NAVMC form 10154 (figure
2-2). An original and four copies of the inventory are required.
(1) Remove all government property, explosives,
flammables, corrosives, and other items that could damage other items
(e.g., liquids, shoe polish, etc.). Make record of items removed; do
not list on inventory. The record will be retained with unit copy of
the inventory form.
(2) Destroy relatively valueless effects such as
magazines, toilet articles, etc.
(3) U.S. or foreign currency in excess of $3.00 and U.S.
treasury checks shall be inventoried (amount and check number) and
delivered to the MEB disbursing officer. A single check for the
@tal amount will be reissued as a U.S. treasury check payable to the
-nit commanding officer. (Note: This procedure is being addressed
io HQMC for clarification.)
