it had been determined that squads of Graves Registrations

personnel would be assigned to Combat Service Support Detachments

where they would follow manuever units in combat. They also would

have several larger collection points at the Direct Support Command

         and Fleet Hospital Five.

As things developed, it was decided that Graves personnel

would be consolidated at CSSD-10 to support the let Marine

Division and at Direct Support GrOUP-2 for the 2nd Marine

Division. Sweeps, or searches for specific remains would be

directed from the DSC. Fromn the DSC, Graves began flying to crash

or battle sites to recover remains.

They recovered remains from a Light Armored Vehicle which had

been mistakenly hit by friendly fire by an Air Force A-10, firing

a Maverick missile, in late January. The effects of the missile

had been catastrophic for the crew of the vehicle.

They recovered remains of two pilots of an AH-IT Cobra

which had crashed in northwestern Saudi Arabia. Additionally, a

serch and recovery was conducted for the crew of a UH-IN Huey 3

         Feb.

LtCol Cassady said he was prepared, as best he could be, for

the 700 remains per day that was expected during the early days of

the ground offensive. Fortunately, that never developed.

As it turned out, The Marines lost only 11 Marines during

the 100-hour war. The Graves Registration Marines turned to

looking for burial sites or remains in the bunkers bypassed

during the offensive. A typical day would see them searching
A* bunkers within the MARCENT sector, until given a specific mission.
