and one (1) BCS. The Ammo section distinguished itself by
coordinating and supervising the receipt and issue of the
battalions BA and DOA with three major ammunition resupplies
being accomplished in a period of five days.
Combat Service Support during Desert Shield and Desert
Storm was provided by CSSD-10 and for a short period CSSD-17.
The requesting of and receipt of most consumable supplies was
very good, with the supplies either being available immediately
or obtained within 24 hours. Deficiencies in the maintenance
support was a problem. Prior to and during combat operations,
the battalion received NO equipment (with the exception of one
CUCV) back from the maintenance cycle that had been repaired.
Commodities received unrepaired equipment back from the CSSD upon
completion of hostilities.
MEDICAL
During this period, the Medical Department supported the
battalion prior to, during, and after Operation Desert Storm
combat operations. The battalion suffered no combat casualties.
The BAS saw a total of 358 sickcall visits, treated six enemy
Prisoners of War for various illnesses, and medivaced four 3/12
Marines for non-combat injuries and illnesses. The Medical
Department's training tempo was high and included Preventive
Medicine training for the Marines of the battalion, contaminated
and conventional casualty evacuation drills, combat casualty
care training for the corpgmen and some Advanced Trauma Life
Support Training for the corpamen. We continued a tradition of
excellence in the 3/12 medical department.
Personnel and Administration
Due to Operation Desert Shield and Desert Storm, the tempo
addition of a
third artillery firing battery added to the increased tempo of
administration. The administrative activity remained at a high
level in association with the attachments and detachments of
augmentees, TAD personnel, reserve units and Unit Deployment
Program Personnel.
